Clear Spring got its start at a “clear spring” at the foot of Fairview Mountain, where Martin Myers built a log cabin and sold water jugs to westbound pioneers. From the 1820s to the 1860s it was a genuine boom town — incorporated in 1821, with seven hotels along the National Pike by 1825 and blacksmiths, wheelwrights and saddlers working around the clock for wagons heading west. The C&O Canal and the railroads quieted it down, but the Civil War kept it lively: this was a staunchly Unionist town — locals raised a 113-foot “Union Pole” at nearby Four Locks in 1861, the Federal army kept a signal station on Fairview Mountain, and J.E.B. Stuart’s cavalry rode right through town on the October 1862 raid toward Chambersburg.
