Funkstown started in 1767 as “Jerusalem,” a settlement of mills and shops on 88 acres sold by Lord Baltimore’s heir to Henry Funk — and it’s been a working town ever since. Antietam Creek wraps around three sides of town, which is why the first mill went up in 1762 and why the Old National Pike crossed here on a stone arch bridge in 1823. Funkstown even holds a Maryland first: the Funk’s-Town Fire Company, incorporated in 1827, was the first fire company in the state. The Civil War came through hard — on July 10, 1863, J.E.B. Stuart’s cavalry fought John Buford’s Union troopers on the edge of town during Lee’s retreat from Gettysburg.
