Keedysville’s roots go back to the 1730s, when German and Swiss settlers arrived along the old Conococheague migration road — Jacob Hess’s mill, built around 1768, became the town’s first landmark. In 1840 the town got its post office and its name: the postal authorities changed “Centerville” to Keedysville, for Sammual Keedy. The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad’s arrival in 1866–67 made the town prosper; the railroad left in 1953, but the Keedysville Historic District — now on the National Register of Historic Places — keeps Main Street looking much as it did a century ago. And the Civil War left its mark: on September 15, 1862, Union General George McClellan ran the Army of the Potomac from the German Reformed Church here, and after Antietam the whole village became a hospital town and supply center. We come out from Frederick via I-70 in about 25–30 minutes, so Keedysville homes are a regular stop on our western route.
